Pumpkin and Sliced Meat Rice (肉片南瓜飯)

This dish beautifully combines the sweetness of pumpkin with savory slices of meat, all mixed into rice, creating a hearty and comforting meal. Here's how you can make it at home.

For the Rice and Pumpkin:

  • 2 cups jasmine or short-grain rice
  • 300 g pumpkin peeled and cut into small cubes
  • 2 ½ cups water or as needed for cooking rice

For the Meat:

  • 200 g pork or chicken thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil


  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  • Chopped green onions or coriander for garnish
  • Sliced mushrooms or other vegetables for added nutrition


Prepare the Rice and Pumpkin:

  • Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain.
  • In a rice cooker or pot, add the drained rice, cubed pumpkin, and water. The amount of water might need to be adjusted depending on the type of rice used. Start with the standard amount your rice usually needs. The pumpkin will release some moisture as it cooks.

Marinate the Meat:

  • In a bowl, mix the thinly sliced meat with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and 1 teaspoon of cornstarch. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.

Cook the Meat:

  • Heat a pan over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil.
  • Add the marinated meat slices and stir-fry until they are just cooked through. Remove from heat.

Combine Meat with Rice:

  • Once the rice and pumpkin are nearly done, gently fold in the cooked meat slices. If using a rice cooker, let it continue to cook until the cycle finishes. If cooking in a pot, cover and let it simmer on low heat for an additional 10-15 minutes or until everything is fully cooked.


  • Once the cooking is complete, add the soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil to the rice mixture. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well to combine all the ingredients evenly.


  • Serve the Pumpkin and Sliced Meat Rice hot. Garnish with chopped green onions or coriander if desired.
