Char Siu BBQ Pork Over Rice (叉燒碟頭飯)
This dish typically consists of slices of Char Siu (Chinese BBQ pork) served over a bed of steamed rice, often accompanied by vegetables or a soft-boiled egg. It's a popular and satisfying meal that you can find in many Chinese restaurants.
Ingredients
For the Char Siu (Or buy pre-made):
- 400 g Char Siu pork recipe above or store-bought
For the Rice:
- 2 cups jasmine rice
- 2.5 cups water
Optional Sides:
- Bok choy blanched
- Soft-boiled egg
- Pickled radish
For the Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons Char Siu sauce store-bought or homemade
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
Instructions
Cook the Rice:
- Rinse the jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Combine the rinsed rice and water in a pot. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for about 12-15 minutes or until the rice is tender and water is absorbed. Let it sit for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
Prepare the Char Siu:
- If you have pre-made Char Siu, slice it into pieces. If not, follow a Char Siu recipe to prepare it first.
Prepare the Sauce:
- In a small saucepan, mix Char Siu sauce, oyster sauce, water, and cornstarch. Heat over low heat until the sauce thickens. Set aside.
Optional Sides:
- If you're adding bok choy, blanch it in boiling water for about 1-2 minutes or until tender yet crisp. Drain and set aside.
- If you're adding a soft-boiled egg, bring water to a boil, gently place the egg in, and cook for 6-7 minutes. Then place it in cold water, peel, and set aside.
Assemble the Dish:
- Place a generous scoop of steamed rice on a plate or in a bowl.
- Arrange slices of Char Siu over the rice.
- Add your optional sides like bok choy and soft-boiled egg around the Char Siu.
Drizzle the Sauce:
- Pour the prepared sauce over the Char Siu and rice, ensuring that the meat is well-coated.
Serve:
- Serve immediately, possibly with some pickled radish or additional sauce on the side.
