Minced Meat Stewed Pumpkin (肉末煮南瓜)

肉末煮南瓜, or Minced Meat Stewed Pumpkin, is a delightful combination of savory and sweet that captures the essence of home-cooked Chinese meals. This dish features tender chunks of pumpkin simmered with minced meat, all enveloped in a rich and flavorful sauce. It's a hearty dish perfect for weeknight dinners or special occasions.

For the Pumpkin and Meat:

  • 1 small pumpkin about 800g, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 300 g minced pork or chicken
  • 1 tablespoon oil

For the Sauce:

  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • Salt and white pepper to taste


  • Chopped green onions or cilantro for garnish optional


Prepare Pumpkin:

  • Peel the pumpkin and cut it into bite-sized chunks.

Cook the Minced Meat:

  • Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the minced meat and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.

Add Aromatics:

  • Add the minced garlic to the meat and stir-fry for about 30 seconds or until fragrant.

Add Pumpkin:

  • Add the pumpkin chunks to the skillet, mixing them well with the meat.


  • Add the soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil, giving everything a good mix.
  • Add Broth and Simmer:
  • Pour in the chicken broth, then cover the skillet and lower the heat to medium. Let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the pumpkin becomes tender.

Adjust Seasoning:

  • Check for seasoning, adding salt and white pepper to taste.

Garnish and Serve:

  • If desired, garnish with chopped green onions or cilantro before serving.
